Opening a science fiction unit is a real problem: pick something too dense and half the class checks out before they understand what’s happening. Pick something too simple and it doesn’t earn the genre any respect. I went looking for a short, teachable first text that could survive being read cold, no preview, no setup — and kept finding stories that needed too much context to land in one sitting.

"They’re Made Out of Meat" is about a thousand words, entirely dialogue, no narration — two unnamed characters slowly revealing they’re non-human intelligences who’ve discovered the beings broadcasting radio signals from Earth are made entirely of meat. Two students reading it cold, aloud, no preview, produces a reliable "wait, this is science fiction?" moment on day one. The guide built around it teaches dialogue-only narration and defamiliarization as craft moves, with five tiered discussion questions and a writing extension that has students try the same technique themselves.
The story text is free on the author’s own site, so there’s nothing extra to source. It just needed a guide built around it that treated it as seriously as a genre opener as it deserves.
