I wanted students producing video, not just writing about it, but everything I looked at assumed either equipment we didn’t have or a timeline we couldn’t spare. Full documentary projects that need weeks. Software-specific tutorials tied to one editing program, useless the moment a student preferred a different app. Nothing scoped to actually finish in the window a busy program actually has.

So I built something small enough to complete and real enough to matter: sixty seconds.

60-Second Documentary Project | Video Journalism | HS ELA & Journalism 8-12

Long enough to tell a real story, short enough that students actually finish it. Two to three weeks from finding a subject to a final cut — interviews, b-roll, audio, permissions, copyright — platform-agnostic by design so it works with iMovie, Canva, CapCut, or whatever your students already have on their phones. Three rubric options, from a 20-point basic version to a full 100-point detailed one, so it scales to whatever level of class is running it.

Not having the right equipment was never actually the obstacle. Not having a project scoped to finish was.
