The language side of AP Japanese has no shortage of resources. The culture side was a different story. What I found split into two directions that both missed the mark — glossy travel-guide material presenting a flattened, tourist version of Japan, or dense textbook chapters with no discussion hook and nothing that asked students to actually grapple with anything.

What the AP exam actually wants is students who can engage with real cultural tension, not recite facts about a culture. So I built toward that instead.

AP Japanese Language & Culture: Unit 1: Family & Tradition

See it on Teachers Pay Teachers — $24.99

Unit 1 centers on a case study of a woman deciding whether to take a promotion that requires frequent travel, set against real tension between the traditional ie family system and contemporary dual-income households. Eleven components in total — a 20-slide presentation on family structure and elder care, listening and reading assessments built from authentic material, tiered discussion prompts, and a presentational writing task with three separate rubric versions. Exam-aligned across listening, reading, presentational writing, and interpersonal communication, so the culture content and the AP skill-building happen in the same lesson instead of two separate ones.

If your language materials are solid but your culture unit still feels like it’s borrowed from a tour brochure, this is what I built to fix that.
