Our first home game of the season was four days out, and I realized the students I’d assigned to cover it visually had never been taught either half of what that actually requires: how to take a photo worth using, and how to write a caption that does more than restate what’s already visible in the frame. Two separate skills, and I needed both covered before Friday, not eventually.

Piecing together a photography lesson and a caption-writing lesson from two different places would have eaten the four days I had. I didn’t have that kind of time this week.

Six pieces covering both halves at once: a sports photography foundation on composition, timing, and camera settings; an AP Style caption deck covering the 5 W’s and the difference between action and identification captions; a classroom anchor chart for quick reference during layout; a structured peer review worksheet; and rubrics for both captions and full photo essays so grading doesn’t turn into a guessing game after the fact.

Four days was enough to get the photo desk trained. It wasn’t enough to build that training from scratch, which is exactly why I’d already put this together ahead of needing it again.
