Podcasting felt like the obvious next step for a journalism program — students already understand interviewing and storytelling, and audio is where a lot of them actually consume news. So I went looking for a unit to run it.

What I found split cleanly into two useless categories. Tech tutorials that walked through recording software step by step but never touched planning, structure, or how you’d actually grade the thing. Or generic project worksheets with no equipment guidance at all, written as if every classroom already had a podcast studio.

So I built the version that covers both halves.

Podcast Project: Complete Unit with Rubric & Planning Guide

A 4-week scaffold covering format selection (interview, news roundup, or solo commentary), equipment options from smartphone to studio, three format-specific planning templates, and a 100-point rubric that grades process and product separately — so planning and preparation count for something even before a single episode is recorded. A day-by-day teacher checklist ties the whole thing together so there’s no guessing what comes next in week two versus week three.

If you’ve got the same instinct — that podcasting belongs in a journalism classroom — and the same problem finding a resource that treats it as both a technical skill and a writing one, this is what I built to close that gap.
