Ted Chiang builds his narrative structure out of a real physics concept — Fermat's Principle of Least Time — and uses it as the logical basis for an alien consciousness that experiences time the way we experience space. The form enacts the theme. This is the hardest story in the workshop sequence, and the best. The craft focus is non-linear narration and science as structural engine. Students who work through this guide come away understanding that structure isn't decoration — it's argument.
