Theme 2.1 (Identity Within Communities) examines the Islamic Hajj and global ummah, Jewish Shabbat and Bar Mitzvah rituals, and Christian denominational belonging. Theme 2.2 (Identity in Relation to Others) explores Sikh turban activism, Jewish diaspora politics, and Buddhism's secularization in Western contexts.
Examples are contemporary and specific. The 2024 Hajj, UK police turban recognition, 2023-2024 Israel-Palestine and diaspora identity debates—students see how identity is lived, contested, and renegotiated in real time. The "How to Apply" section connects identity to essay prompts using actual IB command language.
Practice questions include short responses and a full essay prompt asking students to evaluate whether religious identity is inherited, chosen, or both.
